Zoom conference with Dr Philippa Whitford M.P. 4th September 2020.

2020년 9월 4일 오후 2시 55분에 우리는 영국의 국회의원이신 필리파 박사와 ZOOM을 이용하여 원격 인터뷰를 진행하였다. 그는 과거 유방암 전문 의사로 근무한 경험을 살려 현재 SNP(스코틀랜드 국민당) Health 대변인으로서 활약하고 있다. 먼저, 우리는 미래에 무엇을 하고 싶은지, 본인의 관심사는 무엇인지 등에 대해 필리파 박사에게 각자를 소개는 시간을 가졌다. 서로에 대해 알아가는 시간을 가진 후, 우리는 필리파 박사의 이야기를 듣고 각자 궁금한 점에 대해 질문하는 시간을 가질 수 있었다. 개인적인 의견을 묻는 질문부터 논란이 있는 시사 문제 등 다양한 질문을 하며 한 사람의 정치가로서의, 그리고 어떤 질문에는 의사로서의 그의 답을 들었다. 필리파 박사는 사회에서의 여성들이 겪는 어려움에 대한 본인의 생각을 밝히면서 우리에게 조언을 해주셨을 뿐만 아니라 career politician(직업이 정치가인 사람) 뿐만 아니라 여러 경험을 해 본 사람이 정치에 참여해야 한다는 소신 발언도 하였다. 그와 1시간 동안 이야기를 나누면서 우리는 많은 생각을 하게 되는 계기가 되었고, 앞으로 나아갈 방향에 대한 자신감을 가질 수 있게 되었다.

1. 현재 한국에서 의료 파업이 논란이 되고 있는데, 이에 대해 어떻게 생각하고 영국의 의료 시스템은 어떤가요?
2. 의사로서 나름 성공했는데 정치인을 하게 된 계기는 무엇인가요?
3. 의사와 정치인의 입장에서 낙태에 대해 어떻게 생각하나요?
4. 마약을 사용한 사람들은 무조건 처벌하기만 해야 하는지 혹은 더 이상 마약을 하지 않도록 도움을 주어야 할까요?
5. 의료계 유리천장 (사회에서의 여성의 위치/지위)
6. 살면서 가장 기억에 남는 경험은 무엇인가요?

소감 :

조유나: 원격 수업을 하면서 어려움을 많이 겪었지만 영국의 국회의원과 인터뷰를 하게 되는 경험을 통해 원격 수업의 장점을 크게 느끼게 되었습니다. 그와 현 시사 문제에 관한 이야기를 나누면서 영국의 의료 시스템과 정치에 관한 많은 이야기를 직접 들을 수 있었으며, 어떠한 부분은 한국에서도 접목될 수 있다면 좋을 거란 생각이 드는 제도나 체제도 있었습니다. 필리파 박사의 업적은 말 그대로 모두의 존경을 한 몸에 받아도 될 만큼 대단하다는 느낌을 받았으며 그의 가치관 또한 본받을만한 부분이 있다고 생각하였습니다. 특히 정치를 하는 것 자체가 목적이 되어서 안 된다는 그의 정치가로서의 신념은 본인도 십분 공감하였습니다. 그와의 이야기를 통해 한국 사회를 올바른 방향을 이끌어갈 참된 정치가가 정치를 할 수 있는 사회가 필요하다고 생각했습니다. 이를 실현하기 위해선 우리들의 정치에 대한 관심도 중요하다고 다시금 깨달았습니다.

안지영: 매일 똑같이 반복되는 지루한 원격 수업만 하다가 영국의 국회의원과 직접 이야기를 나눠 볼 수 있는 시간을 가지게 될 수 있어서 정말 즐거웠고, 이러한 기회를 만들어 준 선생님과 시간을 내 주신 필리파 박사에게 감사했습니다. 필리파 박사와 질의응답 시간을 가지며 궁금한 점을 물어보면서 서로의 생각을 공유할 수 있는 것도 정말 의미 있었지만, 저는 필리파 박사가 현재 우리 사회에서의 여성의 지위와 함께 이야기 해 주었던 조언이 가장 기억에 남습니다. 저는 소프트웨어 엔지니어가 되고자 하는데, 일반적으로 사람들은 엔지니어라고 하면 여성보다는 남성들이 가지는 직업이라고 생각합니다. 그래서 사실 이러한 장래희망을 가지고 있다고 자신있게 말하지 못했는데 필리파 박사의 이야기를 듣고 나니 여성이라고 해서 못 할 일은 없다는 사실을 새삼스럽게 다시 한 번 깨닫게 되었고 저에게는 너무나 큰 힘이 되었습니다.

On September 4, 2020, the Grade 12 Ethics and Political Studies Class conducted an online interview with Dr Philippa Whitford M.P., a British Politician through ZOOM. She is the Health spokesperson in the Westminster Parliament for the Scottish National Party (SNP). She was voted the UK Politician of the Year in 2018 by the British public. She is more commonly found arguing with Boris Johnston than talking with Korean students in Jakarta via zoom! We are so grateful that she made some time for us!

We started off by introducing ourselves to Dr Philippa (Our dreams and what we are interested in). Then, we listened to Dr Philippa’s story and point of view about politics in her country. Even though Dr Philippa is currently a politician, she used to work as a Breast Cancer Surgeon. Based on her experience as a surgeon, she can view matters from various perspectives, for example, health or welfare or social justice, and thus find the right solution. After listening to her story, we had a Q&A time with her. From personal questions to questions that covered many current issues in society, she kindly answered all of them. Lastly, Dr Phillippa ended the interview by strongly encouraging us to pursue our dreams just as she had to become a surgeon and a politician despite facing many difficulties.  

Questions:

1. Funding for the medical system in South Korea is currently controversial. What do you think about it, and what happens in the British medical system?
2. You were a successful breast cancer surgeon, what made you decide to become a politician?
3. As a surgeon and politician, what are your views on abortion?
4. Do you think people who are using drugs should be severely punished or given a hand to overcome their drug use?
5. What advice would you give to young women today as a person who has broken through “the glass ceiling” in both medicine and politics?
6. What was the most memorable moment in your life?

Impressions:

Lee  Ye Jin: I had a great time on zoom with my classmates and Dr.Phillipa. We discussed various matters such as abortion, her personal career and her thoughts on current issues. I especially agreed the most when she said: “the two things that really matter in the end are health and the ones you love.” The fact that a person who has achieved so much said this made me realize how precious the little things are in life (health and loved ones). I became so grateful for my health as well as my family and my friends. I also wish to share more love and pursue my dreams in the future.

Heo Ji Yong: I had high expectations for the interview with Dr Phillipa, as Mr Ian had planned this interview for a few months, and as expected, she was spectacular. She is a very inspiring person, due to the fact that she is a successful person who has accomplished incredible things. We talked about various topics, like abortion, politics, drugs and her life. We also asked her questions, which was a good way to communicate and get to know each other. Having her answer the questions made me realise that she looks at important matters, such as politics, from a humanitarian point of view and that we need more people like her to become involved in politics.

Jeong Min Seo: As a student who wants to become a politician, this was a very memorable interview. We discussed a variety of topics such as politics, abortion, and her point of view on different factors of issues currently happening. I never had the opportunity to directly have a conversation with a politician. Therefore, this was a great chance for me to educate myself. I used to think that politicians would be very cold-hearted and straight to the point, however, Dr, Philippa made me realize how people aren’t actually like that. I don’t know how other students may have felt, but she made me realize how important it is to spend quality time with the people you love. She made me want to grow into a person who could enjoy life, day by day by being thankful with what we have.
